Welcome to my online home.

I am an artist based in Northern England, using mainly paint, as well as print and digital media to bring my work into being. My alter ego, nigelpainting exists across a number of platforms as well as recently exhibiting with Gallereo at Art Fairs in Gateshead and Manchester.

The physical effort of moving paint around occupies a different register of experience from either viewing works in a gallery or scrutinising digital images on screen, and it's these multiple lives of art works that hold the key to figuring the pleasures to be had from painting now.

This site includes more than 80 images, representing a body of work that has mostly been developed over the last 4 years. The virtual presence of nigelpainting presides over the collection, binding all together, but it is the act of clicking through the content that brings resonances between images into play.

On the site, the works are divided into series; clicking an image opens up further related content where available. The selective, arboreal logic of web presentation resembles the sequential habits of much of my productive routine, but increasingly, I'm looking for ways in which works can converge to more fully map the virtual sensibilities of nigelpainting as well as the human experience of making and looking.

Perhaps my painted airplanes should be flying over the territories I'm picturing, in the midst of which lie the birdhouse blue prints of a miniature architecture for an imagined avian society. Meanwhile, images of empty boxes & packaging describe the voids behind the picture plane, ensuring the pleasures of looking never fully add up – nigelpainting remains on the cusp of the real, a ghost in the machine glimpsed in the perpetual state of becoming.
